Abandoned Goods

A tenant who abandons the rented living place may leave behind some possessions. Some of these may be valuable.

The Residential Tenancies Act defines abandoned goods as items which are left at the rented premises in three different situations:

  1. when the tenant abandons the property

  2. when the tenant has left after the tenancy has expired

  3. when the tenant has left after the tenancy has been terminated

The Act then goes on to set out rules for how you are entitled to dispose of the items.

If a collection agency or similar organization has already gone to court and received permission to seize abandoned possessions, the rules for you to dispose of the abandoned property do not apply.
