Abandonment
There are two types of abandonment to consider:
- abandonment of the premises by the tenant, and
- abandonment of goods by the tenant at the rented premises.
When a tenant leaves rented premises without giving the required notice or before a fixed-term is over, you may be able to treat the premises as abandoned. The Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) sets out rules as to how you can recover any money owing from the tenant.
The RTA also sets out rules about how to deal with a tenant who abandons property or goods at the rented premises.
