The responsibility for seizures, repossessions, evictions and enforcing court orders used to be carried out in Alberta by the Sheriffs’ Office located in courthouses. These functions are now carried out by authorised civil enforcement agencies. These are now private agencies, but they are regulated by the Office of the Sheriff-Civil Enforcement, which is part of the Court Services Division of Alberta Justice.
The location of Civil Enforcement Agencies can be found under “Civil Enforcement Agencies” in Yellow Pages, on the Alberta Courts web site http://www.albertacourts.ab.ca/- follow links through Court Services and Sheriff-Civil Enforcement) or by searching on http://www.finditincanada.ca/. When carrying out seizures and evictions, the practice of the agencies is governed by rules set out in the Civil Enforcement Act and complaints about their conduct can be made to the Sheriff’s Office. (see http://www.albertacourts.ab.ca/ - follow links through Court Services, Sheriff-Civil Enforcement, filing a complaint under the Civil Enforcement Act). February 2006
